Security Solutions at Harvard leave students unsatisfied

Students at Harvard are reportedly unsatisfied with the security solutions that were aimed at replacing the tiresome process of swiping with the new identification cards to keep abreast with the winds of technological changes. However excitement that surrounded students at Harvard died down slowly after students encountered a great deal of fumbling to search for that sweet spot that triggers the operation of the reader enabling smooth entry.

Students have also explained the process as tiresome describing it as a process that requires a “lot of pelvic thrusting”. Besides, students have also quoted that the device installed is proving very sensitive making it a chore rather than a pleasure making them guess if something is wrong with the cards or if they are using them wrong.

Overall the experience has been a very frustrating experience as no one is in favour of loose readers that operate at such a long range. However, “All the attempts to offer security at Harvard needs to be tighten up” sources said. Putting things in a nutshell, the use of identification cards replacing the entry process making use of swipe cards have to be strengthened a bit and it is certainly a wake up call for the authorities.

An excellent example being that the students who access university network can just present his electronic information card.

Information Card Foundation hopes to unveil a tripartite mode of system that enables a user synchronising through encrypted connection along with an ID supplier like credit card provider or bank & also with reliable party including e-commerce site, financial site or a university network. In contrast to having credit card number that anyone on the net can make use of at anytime. The ID card paradigm unveiled by Information Card Foundation necessitates the synchronisation of all 3 players including reliant party, user and the provider in real time before any transaction could be processed.

The inclusion of a reliable 3rd party in real time ensures the proposal is more secure. Overall, the notion is to harmonise as many ID card players in the sphere of identification cards as much as possible for enhanced security.

Biometric Identification Cards - Can it get rid of bogus students in Colleges?

As a measure to get rid of the burgeoning problems of tackling bogus colleges, all overseas students aspiring to study in the UK require a biometric identity card. Sources have reported that the fingerprinting of overseas students will start this month with the university biggies warning that the process needs to be an efficient and simpler process. This process involves various steps including checking and recording the finger prints of aspirants applying for a student visa. Students who are allowed for admission will be required to get a biometric identification card so as to get more information about their history and what exactly they are supposed to do.

Overseas students have become a vital basis of income for major universities in the UK because they remit a much higher course fee than UK & Swiss/ EEA students. Concerns looming over the application of biometric identity cards like the availability of only 6 centres in the UK leading to tiresome long trips & long queuing in case of non-availability of a proper booking system.

Sources have reported the introduction of this new rule is a part of an ongoing process aimed at trimming down the number of bogus students, resulting in some colleges holding a valid license from the UK Border Agency. There really have been concerns widely prevalent that spurious colleges have been excellent sources of providing false entry to country enabling students to apply for visa despite students showing no real interest in pursuing academics. About 300 colleges in the UK have been identified as bogus in the last 3 years and the some 50,000 to 60,000 students have been expected to be duly affected in the initial phase between November 2008 and March 2009 by the Home office. There were about 313,000 applications submitted for student visas out of which only 217,000 were issued last year.

Come next march, students (read as Overseas students) require to be properly sponsored by a university or college having a license issued by the UK Border Agency and the coming autumn will see a much higher form of tightening by which colleges and universities will make use of use of an “efficient” sponsor management system to report to the UK Border Agency in case students fail to attend academic courses.

Woman used fake Identification cards in theft of laptops

A Williamsburg woman was charged and handcuffed for supposedly stealing 2 laptops from the University of the Cumberlands - one of the laptops she stole using a bogus Identification Card.

Penny Strunk, aged 26, was alleged with two counts of obtaining stolen property amounting to 0, after a long investigation piloted Police Department of Williamsburg to her. In her residence, officers were successful in recovering two laptops that belongs to the U of C library. Public Affairs Officer Jackson, Williamsburg Police Department asserted that one of the computers is integrated with a sort of tracking device that enabled police to locate the whereabouts of Strunk.

Jackson complimented that Williamsburg Police Detective Bobby Freeman has been looking into a lot of laptops that were stolen from the college for a period of two months since the laptops were found missing from the campus. Strunk, as per a report of Jackson, is not at all a student of U of C. Jackson told that Strunk has confessed to the police that he had stolen the two laptops which the police located at Strunk’s residence.

Officer Jackson also said that Strunk allegedly received one of the laptops stolen from U of C’s library making use of fake student Identification cards. The U of C’s libraries comprise a system which permits students to check out college laptops for use in and around the campus.

Police are not quite sure of how she got the second laptop, but it seems the 2nd laptop had been checked back into the library prior to being stolen according to a report by Jackson

Jackson told police were unable to find out the factor that really motivated the thefts. He also observed that expensive products like laptop computers frequenting pawn shops on a regular basis has raised many eyebrows.

The stolen laptops captured were only two of the many laptops reportedly missing. Jackson reported that these laptops were stolen not only from the premises of library, but also stolen from the dorm rooms. Now, police are pretty unsure if Strunk is linked to the other laptop thefts.

The investigation is being carried out by Det. Freeman. Jackson told the police have been helped in their investigation not only by the latest tracking device integrated in one of the systems, but as well as the college. Jackson concluded that the college has supported and helped the police a lot in the investigation that followed the theft.

Latest 3-D face imaging system

A latest 3-D face imaging system that will enable to capture the images of people’s faces in details they pass via high security zones has been developed at the University of Hertfordshire.

The system that makes use of multimedia technology, was devised by Dr Sooda Ramalingam at the University’s School of Electronics, Communication & Electrical Engineering and it will be displayed at the Stuff Live show which will be conducted at ExCel London.

According to Dr. Ramalingam, this face imaging system utilises latest mathematical algorithms instead of standard Matlab software besides a stereo camera setup from Videre Design, and helps to capture images of people’s faces in detail and processes these images in real time application.

The other 2-D face imaging systems enable to capture people’s faces, but if people are dressed in wigs or make-ups, they can deceive the system. The new 3D vision system penetrates through the skin and is equal to measuring the structure of bone. Detailed images can be captured & processed straight away for people who being investigated at border control

This system also helps precise segments and traits of a person’s face to be photographed, that can then be later checked and verified to view if the characteristics equate with the total photo. Dr. Ramalingam believes this system to be much quicker than any other three dimensional system and has 24 frames per sec in real time applications. This system is now ready to use as a research product with many commercial applications.

Japanese payment card market

A latest report from Mass-based Mercator Advisory Group namely Maynard revealed Japan still being a cash-centric society make a favourable market for electronic payments though the usage of these payment cards is low with nearly 800 million credit & debit card in circulation. Its penetration as reported by the survey is low compared to most countries.

While an average Japanese resident on average has more number of credit cards than an average US resident, the amount spent by an average Japanese citizen is only through credit card as compared to a US citizen who spends close to 0.

The Mercator report ascribes this low card usage to factors like industry, culture and industry infrastructure, regularity environment and card acceptance. It also states that credit card in Japan doesn’t place too much importance in terms of convenience, quality and flexibility for customers or consumers for changing their cash preference.

Therefore in spite of the card’s exponential growth in the last five years, it is imperative that Credit card reinstates itself as consumers most preferred mode of payment. As for the growth of debit cards, the market has struggled to re-establish itself ever since it was officially rolled out in 2000.

The report has further pointed out that the advent of electronic money, namely payment cards & devices powered by a contactless chip could possible change all this. The development of prepaid card accounts & credit card accounts, e-money services, have become the most accepted payment method at the point of sales, in addition to cash.

Reports have also suggested that “The key to future’s Japan’s payment card market will be apparently e-money service. Electronic payment methods have become a substitute to cash for payment at the point of sales with a great level of flexibility and convenience.”

“Japan in due course will become a critical market for not just prepaid card but also for debit and card industries. It will surely take some time for the debit card industry to come of age and so the current struggle will continue until further developments are witnessed.” sources reported.

Issues that were discussed in the newest report include features like profitability, changes in regulation, market growth, recent restructuring, competitive landscape and consolidation activities, in addition to active international players increasing gradually.

An anti-skimming law that came into action in California on Jan 1st by Sen. Joe Simitian of Consumer Federation of California, SB 31 laid emphasis on banning the practice of reading of contact less ID card without the awareness and permission of the concerned person. This law also circles around the issue of cards by health insurance companies, government agencies, schools and other institutions.

The federation argued that unofficial persons have the possibility of reading secretly and scanning several data like date of birth, the digital picture and the unique number that is recognizable stored on the card without the awareness of the RFID holder. It is widely used to identify theft or to follow and find the location of an individual.

The proposed bill had been signed eventually into law in October and simultaneously that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger banned another Simitian measure that might have placed limitations on RFID-enabled cards.

University of Washington delays revival of GWorld system

University administrators in The George Washington University have planned to rule out the revival of the GWorld program due to economic and timing issues. A latest system named GWorld 2.0 stated to be put into action by the beginning of the winter fall 2009 semester now appears to consume more time and sources have indicated that it will not take concrete shape until fall 2010. Ken Pimentel, the GWorld card program director said that the project is a long one and it is hard to implement within a week as there are more than thousand card readers in the world. Ken Pimentel has asserted that on looking at the total execution, one is bound to take at least six to eight months for setting up and converting the system.

Once this new card has assumed form, then it will be of tap-and-enter system - similar to that followed for the Metro SmarTrip - instead of following swiping system for entry into residential halls and building. The University carried out an analysis, which suggested that the new card comprise a Metro payment choice along with rest of the properties that would be synchronized in after establishment of the new program.

Associate Vice President Financial Management Edwin Schonfeld said that the present economic calamity was one of many reasons why university officials determined to delay the potentially expensive project. An official estimation has to be released, but administrators have carefully given the project an expensive price tag in the order of few million-dollars. Pimentel said that they are targeting fewer than two million. Sources have also indicated that it integrates numerous servers on the front end & backup servers in various locations - at least on a scale of eight diverse servers. Let alone the licensing fees, software, accessing software.

Schonfeld said the conclusion to delay the plan was made by a team in the treasurer's office, and executive vice president together with people from Services & Information Systems and other managerial departments. The team made a decision it would be best to wait in anticipation of companies that provided the Software and Smart Card system - like Blackboard that restructured their safety and ability so GWorld 2.0 had the majority modern technology.

The current GWorld card could be easily replicated, giving people inaccessibility to the protected areas of the University. Pimentel said that when GWorld 2.0 is confirmed, the cards will be secure from identify theft. Pimentel said that the University is certain of the capability of the system to persist through the next year.

Schonfeld said that they took a close look at the system’s present capability to meet their requirements for the forthcoming year, for both hardware and software, and analyzed that it will continue for one another year or so. He added that the University has not seen any major protection issues with the GWorld cards. While the development has been delayed, Pimentel said that the University has strategized to group more inputs about what staff and student desire for from the card.

Public gives nod for ID card solution scheme
Posted on: 19.01.2008 The public had given approval to David Blunkett’s wish for ID card Solution scheme with 80% of the population in favour as per recent MORI investigation made by IT consultancy Detica. Debates of Human rights activist have actually fallen on ears of people who ignore it, As per the review 73% of British seniors admit that they doesn’t worry at all regarding the negative impact on their human rights.

The study supports Prime Minister Tony Blair’s current statement on ID cards, where he said that there is no more objections of civil liberties----in the vast majority of quarters. Infact the detica research has shown that above 80% of the thousand adults questioned by MORI are pleased to take cards always and 60% accept presenting the police the authority to force them to produce their ID cards in the police station in a week, mostly like driving credentials today. 44%
